The Abundant Culture in Australia

History

Australia is one of the most multicultural countries in the world.

Despite its quality education system and respectable values and norms, Australia has various unique cultures and societies across the country.

Australia is home to more than 270 ethnic groups. With the acknowledgement and respect to the traditional owners on the lands of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders, Australian ethnic groups consist of British, Anglo-Celtic, Italians, and those who have a European background, though by far is the largest proportion of the population since the 19th century. Towards the end of the 20th century, the growth of migration of non-European communities advanced dramatically. The major percentage of the non-European background is occupied by Asians and New Zealanders. The Asian immigrants include immigrants from China, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Moreover, a subsequent flow of refugees from the Balkans modified the cultural landscape of Australia, saturating Australia with a cosmopolitanism that was absent in the mid-20th century.

Living with the Australian Diverse Culture

While also studying in Australia, there are numerous advantages to living with such a rich Australian cultural diversity. Not only does it open our understanding of the multiethnic society around us, but it also enhances our creativity and ideas to learn different languages. For example, Indonesians that are born in Australia will automatically be able to speak both Bahasa Indonesia and English. Along their journey, they would likely gain an interest in learning other languages, for instance, when they are married to an individual with a different cultural heritage.

This is one of the primary benefits of living in a diverse society in Australia.

Another key benefit is for international students, it encourages students to interact with people with different norms, habits, ideas, and lifestyles. This condition is paramount in promoting soft skills such as innovation, communication, and critical thinking. In a multicultural society, overseas students are always exposed to new ways of doing things and unique ways of looking at things. It expands students’ open-mindedness and tolerance which are the core values of a thriving country like Australia. Students will also experience a sense of awareness about their cultural identity, compared to those who live in a homogenous society. Hence, it adds pride and homage to their heritage as their identity.

The heterogeneous society is generous about celebrating their cultural events and traditions which makes the society become more interesting and richer. Those cultural events include sharing tasty cuisine, music, dance, art, and fashion. The culinary options in a multicultural society offer a broad range of flavours that are worth trying and experiencing. Not limited to the delicious food, there are annual cultural music and art festivals for those that are looking for entertainment. Generally, Australian contemporary museums carry indigenous Australian art and various arts and ornaments from other countries as well. Indeed, by living in an Australian diverse society, international students will gain lifetime skills and benefits that are useful for their bright future.
